Paola Mariani

Professional freelance translator

Venetian by adoption, I've been living in the Province of Treviso with my family for several years now. I earned an Italian graduate degree in Translation in 1989 from the Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori [Advanced Institute for Interpreters and Translators] of Trieste. My working languages are French, English and German, which I translate into Italian, my mother tongue, the mastery of which I consider to be a fundamental requirement to perform any translation work and for communication in general.

After spending a few years working c/o private companies and businesses as an executive assistant and liaison interpreter, I've worked full-time as a professional freelance translator, and occasionally as a liaison interpreter for French since 1998.

I've always enjoyed working as a translator, which I consider as a profession having strong cultural relevance, being that it allows mediation, the building of bridges between different societies and cultures, and the discovery of new worlds and aspects. I treat every text, every project, even the most technical and outright monotonous one, as a precious raw material to be molded and refined through a series of steps, that range from the first draft to the revision with corrections, completing my work with the final editing and proofreading. To perform my work I also use CAT (Computer Aided Translation) tools such as Déjà Vu and Trados; thank's to their continuous checking functions, they guarantee terminological uniformity and syntactic consistency even for large projects. Needless to say, the human factor is and will always be a key factor to the ultimate success of a high quality translation, though of course acknowledging the great support information technologies offer on several levels.

I am firmly convinced that translation is an indispensable calling card for each customer, a rather valuable first impression, whether for a book, a product, a presentation, a contract, or anything else; for this reason it is essential to find and place your trust in the right partner! In addition to linguistic and translation skills, reliability, care, promptness, and the ability to solve problems are indispensable requirements for a translator. I personally regard them as an acquired wealth that continues to enrich over time thanks to the incessantly stimulating experience provided by the variety of customers, and the texts covered.

WHAT I KNOW HOW TO DO/WHAT I DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO

I've been a full-time translator and reviser of texts since 1988. I joined AITI – Associazione Italiana Traduttori e Interpreti [the Italian translators and interpreters' association] (www.aiti.org) – because I believe in the spirit of association and that this association effectively represents and protects the little-known world of translators.

I occasionally work as a liaison interpreter only in French.

The linguistic combinations in which I work are:
French-Italian
English-Italian
German-Italian

To do my work, I use specialized software such as Déjà Vu and Trados (CAT), instruments currently indispensable to guarantee productivity, uniformity and high standards of quality in translation

Furthermore, my translations range over various sectors of specialization in the three linguistic pairs. Nevertheless, since it is impossible to master any sector without running the risk of becoming an all-round expert, within macro-areas of economy, law and environment, over time I've specialized in the translation of:
marketing texts and corporate communications
contracts
popular works
technical texts (especially paper industry and workplace safety)

predominately, although not limited to following industries:
automobile,
cosmetics,
food
paper making
as well as the medical-scientific sector (patient associations).

I recently began to translate more in the field of administration, ranging from professional training to the streamlining of bureaucracy.

My customers are for the most part Italian and foreign translation agencies whereas my direct and indirect customers include large multinational companies, government bodies, associations and private companies.

I AM THE RIGHT PROFESSIONAL FOR YOU IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

translations into Italian from the languages and sectors in which I am competent
high-quality translations at reasonable prices, with consistent terminology, attention to detail, delivered on time
translations that measure up to your company's image because you are convinced translation is a key factor in corporate communications
a professional prepared to provide her utmost collaboration to manage every translation project autonomously, always observing the instructions received

I AM NOT THE RIGHT PROFESSIONAL FOR YOU IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

translations from Italian into my working languages because I believe translation must always and only be carried out into your mother tongue; however, if you need other linguistic combinations, I am fortunate enough to have a reliable network of professional colleagues, both in the local and non-resident area, whom I could recommend
translations in the financial, or information-technology fields, or more generally translations in sectors where I am not specialized; in this case though, the a.m. network of colleagues will be ideal!
if you think that translation has no importance and is not going to create the first impression when changing from one language to another
if you always wait until the last minute before requesting a very urgent quotation for an immediate translation because haste at any cost is almost always a deterrent, especially with regard to quality
